How can a medieval castle be transformed into a museum without compromising its interior spaces?

The answer lies in the need for connection: by relocating the staircase to the outside, vertical circulation becomes a bold new architectural feature—an element that opens toward the future of the Alps. The Castle of La Mothe, reimagined in this way, transforms into the Museum of the Alpine Future, with a redesigned façade that becomes a symbol of strong and surprising identity—capable of expressing the link between tradition and modernity. The design is driven by a range of rich and fascinating inspirations: from the dragon of the Saint George legend to the shadowy, labyrinthine prisons of Piranesi. The staircase, winding in a fluid, almost serpentine form, weaves through the ancient ruins of the castle, creating a pathway that appears to dance through time.

Blending past and future, the staircase invites visitors into a continuous exploration—between age-old stones and contemporary design—in a dynamic interplay of memory and innovation. Renewed in this way, the castle becomes more than a relic of the past. It evolves into a cultural hub oriented toward the future: a place where Alpine history meets innovation, telling not only stories of legends and traditions, but also addressing the contemporary challenges of the Alpine region. An emotional journey that does more than respect the past—it reinvents it in a contemporary key, ready to tell new stories and offer a one-of-a-kind experience to the world.
